Believe it or not, Bella is back…with two new eggs!!!
We saw Bella and Birdy flying around our garden and porch in the past two days, and today, Bella was actually sitting back in her old nest. When she flew away, I took a peek and….
…there are TWO new eggs in it!!
I checked out some websites and found this:
Most birds don’t reuse their old nests, no matter how clean they are. They typically build a new nest in a new location for each clutch. This reduces the prevalence of parasites—mites and lice lay eggs in nest materials, producing a whole batch of young parasites that would have a head start in attacking a new set of nestlings. Building a new nest in a new location also means predators are less likely to find the nest site before the young birds fledge.
This site gives more information where it says certain birds do reuse their old nests: https://www.gardenbirdfeeder.co.uk/do-birds-reuse-nests/
It says that bigger birds like eagles or hawks might reuse their old nests because a lot of work goes into building a big nest. Smaller birds who reuse old nests might add on some materials onto the existing ones first.
It looks like Bella decided to reuse her old nest! But from the photo above, she did add a few twigs to it.
So, we will not be using our front door again now, until the eggs hatch and the birdies fly off.
This is nice. Mini house reno does the job.
