Is it true that most ginger cats are male?

Well, tomorrow we will know for sure about Kai and Indra’s gender!

My guess? Yes, they are both males because of their weights.

I know there’s an 80% chance of them being male, but this article says it is a 75% chance.

Yes, but not all. The ‘ginger gene’ which produces the orange colour is on the X chromosome. Females have two X chromosomes and so need two copies of this gene to become ginger, whereas males need only one.

This means there are roughly three males to one female ginger cat. Ginger tom cats father tortoiseshell or ginger females. If both parents are ginger, then they will have all ginger kittens as well.

Hi Dr Chan. Hope all is well. I suspect my ginger girl Mimi has both ginger parents. The three used to show up together when Mimi was still a kitten. As Mimi was pregnant, I suspected a grey male tabby who could be the father. When Mimi gave birth to the first and only litter (I spayed her then), she had 2 tortoiseshell females, 1 grey female and 2 ginger male.

Most likely as the female ginger would need two X chromosomes!
